1. Solar Panels
The generators. Residential systems today use 430–460W modules; count = target system size ÷ panel wattage. A typical home needs 15–25 panels.

2. Inverter or Microinverters
Converts panel DC into household AC. Microinverters (one per panel, or one per two with APsystems duos) are the DIY favorite — simpler design, no high-voltage DC strings, rapid shutdown built in. String inverters put one box on the wall instead.

3. Racking & Mounting
Rails, roof attachments, and clamps that hold the array to the structure. Comp-shingle roofs use flashed deck attachments + rail; count roughly one rail pair per two panels and one attachment every four feet of rail.

4. Rapid Shutdown (RSD)
NEC 690.12 requires conductor voltage at the array to drop fast when power is cut, so firefighters can work the roof. Microinverters and optimizers satisfy this automatically; plain string-inverter systems need module-level RSD boxes.

5. PV Wire
Sunlight-resistant 10AWG PV wire for the array wiring, in both black and red so polarity stays obvious. A 250ft spool of each covers most homes with slack to spare.
Pro tip: PV wire is rated for exposed outdoor runs; regular THHN is not — THHN belongs inside the conduit, PV wire on the roof.

MC4 connectors terminate every field-made PV wire run. Buy male and female packs plus a few pre-made extension jumpers for awkward spans between sub-arrays.
Pro tip: Crimp with a real MC4 crimper and never mate connectors from different manufacturers on the roof — mismatched MC4s are a known fire cause.

7. Disconnect & Junction Boxes
A flashed rooftop junction box transitions array wiring into conduit; downstream, your AC disconnect gives the utility a visible break point. Microinverter systems combine branch circuits in a combiner panel that often includes the monitoring gateway.
Pro tip: Most utilities require a lockable, visible-blade AC disconnect within sight of the meter — confirm the spec in your interconnection paperwork before you buy.

8. Conduit
EMT protects conductors from the roof junction box down to the inverter/disconnect and over to the service panel. 1" handles most residential home runs; step up to 1.5" for long runs or extra circuits.
Pro tip: Sketch the run and count fittings before ordering — couplings, weatherheads, and straps are what people forget, not the sticks.

Not required for a grid-tied system, but worth pricing if you want outage backup or your utility undervalues exported energy. - A torque wrench — every racking bolt and lug has a published spec inspectors can ask about.

- Grounding lugs and bonding hardware for the rail system.
- Butyl tape or approved sealant for penetrations your flashing doesn’t cover.
- Wire management clips — zip ties alone won’t survive 25 years of UV.
- Fall protection. Non-negotiable.
The Order of Operations
